Les Jazzticots’ Deborah Tropez

This is one of my favorite washboard performances. Deborah Tropez is a French percussionist who specializes in early jazz styles. She can play note-perfect versions of the early tunes, and her washboard skills are amazing. She can sing, too.

Les Jazzticots is a French hot jazz band formed by her father, who plays sousaphone. Her sister Aurelie is the clarinet/saxophone virtuoso who fronts the band.

There are plenty of Jazzticot videos on the Internet, but this is one of the best. Deborah is in total control of the old standby “Washboard Wiggles.” She plays her board à la françaiseno surpriseand she has it rigged out with a cowbell, a woodblock and a splash cymbal. The rhythm is sure and solid, and every accent, every fill, is exactly right. And she was only nineteen at the time that this video was shot!

If you’re interested in learning more about Les Jazzticots, you can do so here. If you want to learn more about Deborah Tropez, visit her site. (Trigger warning: it’s in French.)
